STEM Innovation Camp in partnership with Oracle Academy Nigeria

Junior Achievement Nigeria (JAN) in collaboration with Oracle Academy organized its 2nd Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Innovation Camp. The STEM Innovation Camp helps raise awareness amongst secondary school students aged 15-18, on STEM related issues, showcases young innovation, and provides students with industry role models who show the vital role tech-based CSR programs play in the future of education, while aligning business needs within a secondary school curriculum.

STEM students came together in mixed teams from different schools and created ideas for an application within a short deadline. The challenge was unveiled to student’s day at the event and they were given access to tools, expert advice and resources. Students also created a sales plan to support their concept and the winning team was chosen by a panel of Oracle judges. Participants provided solutions from a variety of angles varying from fun ways to engage learning to solutions for students with learning difficulties like Dyslexia. The winner of this year’s STEM innovation camp was Team Apex, who developed a learning process application called Lean Pal, an App designed to provide a fresh, fun take on the learning process. Team Apex’s target group was students of all levels, and they intended on having the tablets for with the application an education initiative and have the Nigerian government cover the cost to public school students, and in private schools it will be paid for through tuition fees.

JAN’s newly appointed Executive Director Mrs. Efua Edeh issued this supporting statement, "JAN created STEM in efforts to have a balanced variety of programs while keeping up with technology trends. STEM serves the dual purpose of engaging students and tech company employees early while encouraging the JAN culture of volunteerism within the corporate sector. In addition, working on STEM addresses two of our three pillars, entrepreneurship, and work readiness"

Students from Kings College Lagos, Caro Favored College, Fountain Heights Secondary School and International School Lagos. Initiatives such as the STEM innovation camp provide corporations like Oracle the opportunity to interact with young talent and engage young, brilliant Nigerians in their brand early.
