During JAN's 15th Anniversary celebration, the Vice-chairman of JAN, Mr. Niyi Yusuf, unveiled JAN's Technology Delivery Platform which constituted of an E-learning platform and a mobile app.
JAN believes in order to reach out to 1 million youths by 2020, there is a need to key into the use of Technology to enable people to learn anytime and anywhere through E-learning and mobile apps.
The mobile app called JAN Career Cluster, which complements the Careers With a Purpose (CWAP) program, was also launched to help students plan their careers. We presently have the Android version on our website for download and also, the windows version in the windows store. The plan is to also have the IOS and Blackberry version.
In light of this, JAN has launched its E-learning platform which helps students in both primary and secondary schools to study courses relating to Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurship and Work
Readiness. The use of new multimedia technologies and the internet in learning is seen as a means to improve accessibility, efficiency and quality of learning by facilitating access to information resources and services as well as remote exchanges and collaboration.
The E-Learning platform is a great introduction to the new global standard of communication and education while introducing our young people to the concept of the internet as a learning tool; not just for entertainment. Children in many developed nations have access to a tablet from birth, while the average Nigeria child has little or no access to a computer or internet. We must close the gap if our youth are to stand a chance at survival in the modern world. We need to nurture a generation of young leaders who are confident in their technical abilities.
Some schools had adequate
computer labs, while others have no real facilities at all, but the common
thread during the re-launch of our E-Learning platform May 12th,
2015 in majority of the schools we attempted to impact was internet
access. The existing bandwidth was not
sufficient to carry all the systems to give all students present access to the
platform. In some cases some participants finished faster than others because
they had a faster connection. This left a lot of students disappointed as in
some cases they had to huddle up in small groups to view the program and they didn’t
experience the platform.
JAN has made the platform data and
user friendly, while introducing participants to the basics of remote learning.
They experienced the process of setting up an account; going through the process
of creating an appropriate username and password.
Students received an E-Certificate for each
module they complete, so the students that were able to complete their modules
and receive a certificate were so proud of themselves and it sparked additional
interest from the students. They are eager to expand their learning
experiences, and JAN has a great model in place; we just need additional
support delivering the platform to our students.
