2016 National Company of the Year Competition (#NCOY2016)

 Junior Achievement Nigeria’s (JAN) annual flagship event The National Company of the Year Competition (NCOY) will be taking place Thursday 6^th October, 2016  in Lagos. JAN’s National Company of the Year Competition is an annual event that brings the JA Company Program winners of Regional Competitions across Nigeria together to compete for the National Company of the Year Award. JA Company Program teaches Senior Secondary students how to start and run their own business from inception to liquidation with the guidance of a volunteer. They sell shares, raise start-up capital, pay dividends to shareholders and use 10% of their profit for a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity of their choice. The 2016 NCOY winner will represent Nigeria against other JA Africa member-nation companies for the title of JA Africa Company of the Year in Zimbabwe this December.  

At NCOY, JA student companies present the results of their enterprise before a panel of independent judges and are critiqued on their business achievements as a whole and each team member’s contribution. For a team to win this award it is not sufficient just to run a financially successful JA company or create an exciting product/service. Participants must demonstrate a firm understanding of why their company performed as it did. Judges look for innovation in all aspects of a company’s operations as the students present an Annual Report and host a Trade booth. The judges for this year’s competition include JAN Ambassador and Alumnus of JA Company Program, Mr. Tunji Eleso, Co-Founder, CoCreation Hub; Mr. Audu Maikori, Founder/President, Chocolate City and Mrs. Lola Oyeka, Citi Country Public Affairs Officer, Nigeria & Ghana. JA Africa CEO/President, Mrs. Elizabeth Blintiff will also be in attendance to support JA Nigeria. 

In December 2015, JA Nigeria’s team The Dynamites; Government Girls College, Abaaji emerged the winners of the 2014 JA Africa Company of the Year Award held in Libreville, Gabon. Despite waiting a year to compete due to the Ebola outbreak they also claimed the 2014 FedEx & 2014 Citi Client Satisfaction Awards for their development of bags called “Pink Lady.” The Dynamites recorded a gross profit of N 662,000; a net profit of N165,000 and sold 250 shares at N200 per unit. For CSR they provided scholarships to two (2) children and planted 250 trees in their school.
