National Company of the Year Competition (#COY #COY2015) Sponsored by The Abraaj Group & Citi Foundation
Junior Achievement
Company Program impacts more than 380,000 young people a year globally. The
program teaches senior secondary level students how to start and run their own
business; develop a product/service, and market it with the support of a
volunteer trained by JAN. Volunteers are crucial to the success of this program
as they serve as business advisors to students. The 2015 Edition of Company Program was sponsored by The Abraaj Group and Citi Foundation.
Students are selected to form a company, chose a business name and elect a board to oversee the company for the program duration. The offices include: The Chairman of the Board (President//CEO), Director of Production, Marketing, Finance and Human resources. They create a company; raise capital by sales of shares; decide on what to produce; the market to sell their products; pay dividends to investors and use about 10 percent (10%) of their profit for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity of their choice.
Through a variety of hands-on activities, these young entrepreneurs develop a better understanding of their role in a global economy. At liquidation, all proceeds from sales of products or rendering services is channeled towards Corporate Social Responsibility and dividends for shareholders. JAN’s annual Company of the Year Competition (COY) is held nationally (stage 1) and regionally (stage 2). This year’s theme is “Product of the Year.”
The National Company of the Year Competition was held in Lagos, 14th October 2015, The winner of Stage Two will represent JA Nigeria in Gabon, where they will compete against eighteen (18) African Countries for the title of 2015 JA Africa Company of the Year, December 2015.
The four stages of the competition are:
1. Company report
2. Oral presentation before an audience
3. Trade booth display and booth interviews
4. Interview with the judging panel
At each stage of the COY competitions, JA student companies proudly present the results of their enterprise and learning experience before a panel of independent judges who determine company performance against the competition criteria as compared with other JA companies at each stage of the competition process.
Participants must present the business achievements of each team as a whole, and each team member’s contribution. For a team to win this award, it is not sufficient just to run a financially successful JA company or create an exciting product/service. They must also demonstrate an understanding of how and why the company performed as it did. Judges also look for evidence of innovation and application of new ideas in all aspects of a company’s operations.
Through qualification rounds at the national level, finalists are ultimately selected to compete at the regional level. Therefore, the JA Company of the Year Competition creates a signature showcase for Junior Achievement, its sponsors and, most importantly, the students who have benefitted from the impact of the JA Company Program. This annual event allows young people aged 15 -19, to demonstrate their business acumen and spirit of entrepreneurship in a competitive environment, which engages business, education and policy leaders as well as the media.
JAN National Programs Coordinator Mrs. Franca Thomas disclosed that JAN created the theme “Product of the Year’ to leverage on the creativity and innovation of students in all regions. Franca wholeheartedly believes Nigeria has the 2015 Regional Company of the Year winning team.
The 2015 edition of COY is proudly sponsored by The Abraaj Group and CitiFoundation.
