#STEM Careers Campaign: Identifying the Problem

Over the last decade, several African countries has gained the world’s attention as emerging innovation hubs. We have seen technologies like M-Pesa, Mellowcabs electric minicabs and Saavyloo pedal-operated waterless toilets, created by STEM entrepreneurs to address some of the real challenges faced on the continent. To maintain this trend, there is a need, across the continent, for greater emphasis on hands-on STEM education that bridges the gap between theory, entrepreneurship and STEM innovation. Additionally, given the realities of global warming, natural resource depletion, energy crises, and environmental degradation, it is critical that STEM solutions to development challenges are sustainable. Innovations should not only create greater efficiencies to produce financial gains or simplify and improve our lives, but must also reduce and/or reverse environmental impacts, so future generations can continue to adequately provide for their needs. Company Program Abuja 2015

The Company of the Year competition takes place annually for participating secondary schools.   The Program teaches students in SS1 & 2 how to set up and run a company of their own in their respective schools. It is founded on the 3 pillars of JA Programs- workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. The activities includes selling shares, conducting elections for key officers who will handle the affairs of the company like marketing, production, HR, Finances and the CEO. At liquidation, all proceeds from sales of products or rendering services is channeled towards Corporate Social Responsibility and dividends for shareholders. This years 2015 Competition theme is, "Best Product of the year".   Sponsors of this years Company Program were Citi Foundation, Abraaj and First Bank Nigeria Limited. Global Money Week/Financial Literacy Day 2015

This year’s Financial Literacy Day was a great success. JAN in partnership with the bankers committee celebrated GMW in 24 schools across the country reaching 3948 students with the JAN module “Growing Your Money” in line with the 2015 GMW Theme: “Save Today, Safe Tomorrow”. Our Lagos office was able to secure Radio coverage on four national stations; TV coverage on TVC News and national print coverage. The program concluded with Q&A and commentaries from students and teachers.
